Walpurgis Night – Night of Witches and Demons
On the occasion of Walpurgis Night, the Seligenstadt Guild of Town Guides invites you to an evening guided tour. Myths and customs surrounding this medieval witches’ night will be illuminated.
According to legend, Walpurgis Night is named after Saint Walpurga. On the night of the first of May, witches and druids danced on the Harz mountains and wreaked havoc there to prevent the arrival of spring. Participants in this tour will learn why salt was sprinkled on the doorstep, what role herbs played, why brushwood brooms were placed with the bristles pointing upwards and what significance the gundel vine wreath had.
At the end, there will be a witch-defending drink in the Hexenstübchen (Witches’ Room) of the Fastnachtsmuseum Seligenstadt (Seligenstadt Carnival Museum).
